"American Dream" - Tyra Banks
Tyra is no Michelle and the shoot lacks imagination (I've seen the "politician's wife spread more than once this year) but there are some positive things about it.
For one, Harper's got Tyra to peel off that blonde lace-front wig. I mean, sure they just slapped another one on but at least her follicles got to breathe for a minute. Second, color me shocked (!) that two dark skinned black children were used in the editorial. I didn't know fashion magazines knew what to do with black children save dress them in 'ethnic' clothing and maybe photograph them in close proximity to livestock and vacationing models.
The only photo that really leaves me scratching my head is the one of the First Couple in bed. Tyra's beautiful strapless gown is strewn across the sheets but instead of being in an intimate embrace, the couple (dressed in Harvard sweatshirts) are reading the paper and appear to be discussing the health benefits of peppermint tea. I mean, I know this is supposed to be a little tongue in cheek but THAT is not my Barack and Michelle. I guess HB chickened out at the prospect of showing a little black love.

Tyra on Harper's Bazaar - September 2008
Harper's Bazaar has unveiled a peek at one of their two September covers, both set to feature Tyra Banks.
From what I can see the photo looks good and for as much as I find Tyra completely irritating, I'm pleased to see a black woman on the cover of a fat September fashion magazine.
It's also a relief to see that she is not dressed up like Michelle Obama on the cover.
From what I can gather there will be two covers, one for subscribers and one for the newsstand. I'm guessing this one is for the subscribers. I'll share some scan when I get the magazine in the mail unless I find them somewhere else sooner.

We Can All Exhale Now: ALT Will NOT be Giving Michelle Obama Fashion Tips
Via Style FileIt appears that the alarming rumor going around fashion town that Andrea Leon Talley was enlisted by Michelle Obama to be her new stylist was just that, a horrifying rumor.
The man himself told Derek Blasberg, "let me go on record saying that I have never, ever given her any advice on what to wear," and added "think that Michelle Obama does not need advice."
Thank G-d for small miracles. Don't get me wrong, I love ALT and he certainly performed a miracle on Renee Zellweger when he started styling her for the red carpet, but Captain Capeman is the last person I want advising our dear Michelle.
She obviously already knows what works for her and has been doing a fine job getting dressed every morning.
That said, part of me would have loved to see what ensemble he would have come up with for the inauguration. I've got visions of a turban, fur, and ostrich skin dancing in my head.
Jourdan Dunn - Fashion Rocks 2008 - "Heart of Darkness"
I know, I know, it's like Jourdan Dunn Day up in here but the weird teenage black girl who still lives inside of me loves this photo of her. Not an animal print, spear or elephant in sight.

"The Now Ease" Vogue Italia - August 2008
Italian Vogue editor Franca Sozzani made good on her promise to continue using black models in the magazine. This month's issue features an editorial titled "Fun and Chic" featuring a photo of Chanel Iman with various other models while Jourdan Dunn gets an all too brief editorial alongside male model Josh Beech. I must say that I really like Jourdan's editorial (shot by Emma Summerton.) It's got a real melancholy vibe to it that goes well with the black and white shots. I just wish it was longer.

POP Magazine Fall/Winter 2008 Covers
The newest issue of POP Magazine looks like it's taking cues from last month's wildly successful issue of Italian Vogue. The Fall/Winter issue will feature six cover models including Jourdan Dunn, Oluchi, and of course Naomi Campbell.
