Beyonce (and Mama) Set to Launch 'Sasha Fierce' Junior Clothing Line Inspired by Thierry Mugler

Left: Thierry Mugler's inspiration for Beyonce's tour costumes
Right: Beyonce and Mama Knowles' re-interpretation for the back-to-school set

Because there ain't no money like more money, Beyonce and Co. are expanding their House of Dereon label to include a juniors named after Bey's alter ego called 'Sasha Fierce.' The oddly timed line is a re-interpretation of the edgy garments that designer Thierry Mugler designed for Beyonce's latest tour and will include a full range of products from sportswear to handbags and accessories. The clothing itself will be pared down, serving as a backdrop to highlight the more over-the-top jewelry, sunglasses and shoes.

Beyonce - Marie Claire - June 2009

Cute dress. Slightly odd expression.

I remember a time almost ten years ago when Marie Claire was my favorite magazine. The stories were interesting, the celebrity pieces weren't quite so fluffy, the models and "real women" used on its pages were diverse* and it actually had a point of view that seemed larger than "buy this stuff it will make you happy." Nowadays I only subscribe to the magazine because it only cost me $5 for two years. On average, it takes about five minutes to flip through it before it gets dumped into the recycle bin.

That said, this issue wasn't a complete bust. I found a few books in the "Radar" section that are now on my wishlist: Monica Ali's "In the Kitchen" and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's "The Thing Around Your Neck." It also reminded me to Tivo Jada Pinkett-Smith's new TNT drama HawthoRNe. Lastly, I entered a contest for a chance to win "Beyonce's Luxe HoD Wardrobe," which I know will make a showstopper at my son's next preschool mixer.

*I have to add that last month's issue contained two great spreads featuring models Alyssah Ali and Atong Arjok.

House of Dereon - Really?

Beyonce gets so much venom spewed at her on blogs that I feel I have to preface this post by stating for the record that I think she is a beautiful and talented young woman. Any negativity in this post is NOT directed at her but more at the design team that brought up this particular ensemble.

When I saw this HoD ad in Lucky magazine, it definitely caught my eye. First, because of the aforementioned loveliness of the model and luminous quality of her skin. Once I soaked that in and really looked at what Bey is wearing, I could not help but marvel at the creation:

A tie-dyed zip up belted peasant-sleeved shoulder revealing granny bloomer jumpsuit with brass button detail at the pockets.

To be fully appreciated, it must be said aloud.

Bey is in the water for this ad but is it swimwear? A pool-side lounging outfit (imagine the tan-lines)?Party wear? Lingerie? I honestly have no idea but it is definitely an eye-catcher.

What do you think? Has House of Dereon made a mark in the fashion world?

Vogue - April 2009 - Beyonce by Mario Testino

She's no Michelle Obama but love her or hate her, Beyonce is probably the top pop star in the world right now and certainly deserves to be on Vogue's cover more than some of the recent cover subjects. Her fashion choices aren't always my favorites but she has taken a few risks here and there that I can appreciate. I also have no complaints about this photo, she looks beautiful and is working that gorgeous blue gown.

I can't even comment on Anna having back to back covers with black women. My jaw, she is on the floor.

Beyonce Covers Elle - January 2009

I guess it's Beyonce Day on this blog.

Looks like she'll be on the cover of next month's ELLE magazine. The cover on the left with the painted on dress and bow is the newsstand cover while subscribers like me get Sasha Fierce on the right.

Personally, I prefer the subscriber cover, at least boring old ELLE made an effort there to make it a little edgier and I'm always in full support of clean covers that don't feature models being squeezed to death between twin columns of font madness.

If you're interested in reading the Beyonce article follow this link. They're calling it The Liberation of B. which I guess is sort of like The Emancipation of Mimi but without the butterflies and bottomless bottles of Pinto Gris.

Beyonce in Zuhair Murad

I kind of like this dress. It definitely flatters Beyonce's curves but I'm not too wild about how she wore her hair with the look. I think the way the model is wearing her hair shows off the neckline a bit more which is nicer and a little more romantic.

This dress should really be worn by the sexiest vampire at the party but Beyonce's expression and posture just say Miss Congeniality 2008 to me.

Sasha....I Mean Beyonce in Armani Prive S/S 08

I am in full support of Beyonce wearing clothing not designed by her mother. She's been mixing it up lately sporting a few looks by more avant-garde designers like Gareth Pugh. She doesn't always pull it off but it's still fun to watch her try. Here she is in a more accessible Armani Prive top. What do you think?
